S is for Sherlock. Sherlock Holmes. I think Sherlock is the ultimate detective hero in literature. Sir Arthur Conan Doyle was brilliant. I find it fascinating that Doyle was a physician and those details with Dr. Watson are so real for me. I have read most of the novels about Holmes and I have seen just about every movie, mini-series, etc. about this beloved character.
I love detective novels so I thought I would recommend a new and amazing character like the beloved Sherlock we know. That character’s name is Erast Petrovich Fandorin. Erast is a fictional 19th-century Russian detective and the hero of a series of Russian historical detective novels by Boris Akunin.
The first one is called The Winter Queen. Description: Moscow, 1876. The 20-year-old Erast Fandorin, recently orphaned, enters civil service as a clerk in the Criminal Investigations Department of the Moscow Police. While investigating a scandalous but, seemingly, quite straightforward case of public suicide by a rich young man, Fandorin uncovers a powerful and terrible conspiracy.
I have read the first few books in the series and just love Erast. I also love this time period in Russian history so my two loves are combined- great character in a great setting. I highly recommend picking up The Winter Queen today.
In Russia, the Fandorin series rivals The Lord of the Rings or Harry Potter in popularity. Do you have other suggestions for characters in novels that are similiar to Holmes?
