Finish this sentence: If you like to read __________ then you’ll like my books. (Tolkien)

Who is your favorite fantasy author? I like Tolkien, J.K. Rowling, and C.S. Lewis.

Tell us about your journey to publishing. Did you always want to self publish? No, I was planning on finding a literary agent and publishing house, but after 18 months of dragging my feet, I decided to do it on my own, because the daunting task of taking the traditional route was preventing me from writing the book.

How has social media helped you to reach/retain your readers and fan base? Any words of advice? It has helped tremendously. I’ve been able to develop a loyal following in such a short time and get the word out about various promotions as well. Don’t be afraid to spend time promoting your work, but also don’t be afraid to spend time thanking your fans personally for their interest.

Has living in Hawaii the last few years helped with your story building? Do you plan to incorporate some of the landscapes or culture into the Everville series? Hawaii has similar landscapes in some areas with New Zealand. It’s like I live in Middle Earth with a nice beach. It certainly is conducive to writing and creative imagery.

Tell us about your main character Owen Sage. He is a hero in the classic sense, but believable and easy to relate to.

Do you have favorite character in your series?   I like all of my characters.

Does the Everville series have an underlying message or theme? If so, what is it? I think that there is good in all of us, and it’s up to us to channel that good to maximize our life. I try to put of lot of positive message that are intertwined with the story itself. Just some common sense advice that isn’t always so common.

What was your favorite scene to write in the series? I enjoyed the scenes when they were traveling across different lands to reach their destination. I allowed me to interject world creation and action.

Who did your book cover design? Damon in South Africa. He is fantastic!

Do you think critique groups/writing groups are important? Do you belong to one? I’m sure they can have some benefit, but I don’t actively participate in any at the moment.

It’s your time to pitch the Everville series. Why should people buy your book? Everville is an original take on the traditional epic fantasy genre. It combines college, friendships, honesty, with epic fantasy and world creation. It’s a quick read that leaves you wanting to read the next book in the series and watch a movie adaptation.

What advice do you have for those of us who are aspiring writers? Believe in yourself, don’t take no for an answer, and never give up.

What writing project are you working on right now? I’m currently working on Everville: The City of Worms, which I hope to have available in August.

The First PillarThe First Pillar (Everville #1) is available on Amazon in e-book, paper back and hard cover.

Goodreads description: Owen Sage is the emblematic college freshman at Easton Falls University. With all the worries about his first year in college, he was not prepared for what would happen next. His way of life was flipped upside down when he mysteriously crossed into another dimension, into the beautiful land of Everville. His excitement was abruptly halted when he discovered that there was a darkness forged against both the natural world, which he knew well, and the new land which he discovered, Everville. He must devise a plan to save both worlds while joining forces with the race of Fron and The Keepers, whom both harbor hidden secrets he must learn in order to gain power over the evil that dwells in The Other In Between. With a race against time to save both worlds, his short time at Easton Falls did not quite prepare him for the evil, dark forces he must fight in order to conquer The Other In Between.
