Today we have a guest blogger with us, Indie author Konstanz Silverbow. I hope you enjoy getting to know more about her debut novel Only Half Alive. Below you’ll find a posting from her about researching her book. Enjoy!
Before I did any research I wrote the entire first draft of Only Half Alive. Many places in the book had (PUT NAME HERE) or (FIND A FITTING FLOWER) there. But it’s how I work best. I get that first draft down and then add more later.
So, what did I have to research in order to write Only Half Alive? Well first off I looked into Necromancers. Until you’ve read the book, I’m sure that doesn’t seem very fitting seems how the main character is a demon. But it’s true and I assure you, very fitting!
I also looked into demons. I read every encyclopedia on both creatures I could find. I googled them to see what came up first, and even did a poll on my blog to see what readers thought each creature was.
A demon is most often perceived as ugly, evil, and associated with angel/demon stories. Want to know a little fun fact? *Whispers* There aren’t any angels in Only Half Alive.
Back to research! After writing that first draft I had each of the characters names. So when I was getting ready to edit and revise I thought it would be fun to see what each of their names mean.
This is what I found:
Christina (The demon) – Follower of Christ
Riley (The human) – Courageous
Finn (The Vampire) – Finder
I could tell you more of them but that would give away some spoilers in the book! Now Christina’s name is the one that really stands out, especially if you haven’t read the book. If you have read the book, it is very obvious how fitting those names are!
After I realized how fitting each name was, how they all fit perfectly together I knew I had to make sure that all other small details matched. Christina receives a bouquet of flowers in the book. What flowers? Larkspur. I first had to find a flower that was fitting to the setting. After that I looked into the meaning of flowers to find one that fit perfectly, that had more meaning.
So what does larkspur mean? Beautiful spirit.
The rest of Only Half Alive remained, aside from small revisions, major edits, and formatting.
