People are always asking me what I do for a living or what I want to be when I grow up. I work at a library during the day. I love shelving old books. I love running my fingers through their pages and smelling them. And because my side job is as an investigator, being in a library works great for researching out our next gig. Primarily we do ghost hunting but we also do paranormal investigations and we’ll talk about the differences today.
Ghost Hunting is the process of investigating locations that are reported to be haunted by ghosts. Typically, a ghost hunting team will attempt to collect evidence that they see as supportive of paranormal activity. Ghost hunting relies heavily on technology to capture the ghost or haunt. Some people in the paranormal world think that the main focus in ghost hunting is to allow participants to have a fun and scary time. I can somewhat agree with this.
Last year a friend of mine wanted me to go with her on a ghost hunting tour of old haunts in New York City. It was so much fun. The guides talked about the history of the buildings, drove a spooky fan and played spooky music. They built of certain stories and in the end it did freak us out. More legit ghost hunters that I’ve seen are the Ghost Hunters on the Sci-Fi channel. Their goal is to help those who seek their help come up with plausible ways to explain haunting events at their locations. A lot of time they can explain things away but sometimes, it really is pretty freaky. Because of the Ghost Hunters show and others, I think that ghost hunting has started to gain more respect and not be such a joke. We’ve seen them portrayed in countless horror movies and they always make them out to be crazy like in Stephen King’s Red Rose.
A Paranormal Investigation is simply the investigation and study of events that mainstream culture would define as paranormal. Most of your time in this type of an investigation involves research. You find out about the place that is being haunted and this includes the people, history, events, deaths, rumors, legends, photographs, etc. Once all of the data is collected, then the investigation will move to the haunted place. They use the same equipment but don’t rely on it too heavily. It’s just a piece of the bigger puzzle.
I guess depending on the type of ghost hunt, it can be similar to a paranormal investigation in some ways. What do you think?
