A-Z Challenge 2015: S is for Synonym

What is a Synonym? A synonym is a word or phrase that can be substituted for another word or phrase in a particular context. For example, honest is a synonym of trustworthy. We can say that honest and trustworthy are synonymous. Remember a synonym in one context may not be the same in another. Synonyms are a big part of a writer’s bag of tricks. 

Examples:

  • Mean: Unfriendly, Unpleasant, Bad-tempered, Difficult
  • Outgoing: Friendly, Sociable, Warm, Extroverted
  • Rich: Affluent, Wealthy, Well-off, Well-to-do
  • Strong: Stable, Secure, Solid, Tough
  • Funny: Humorous, Comical, Hilarious, Hysterical
  • Happy: Content, Joyful, Mirthful, Upbeat
  • Hardworking: Diligent, Determined, Industrious, Enterprising
  • Honest: Honorable, Fair, Sincere, Trustworthy
